Brewster Mayor James Schoenig and Putnam County Executive MaryEllen Odell Thursday afternoon unveiled plans for what amounts to a new downtown Brewster, a "Transit Oriented Development" project, meaning a development based around a transit hub, in this case, the Brewster Train Station. The project is intended to revitalize the area and entice millennials to settle in for the long term.

The initial construction phase is supported in part by a recently awarded $2,000,000 Empire State Development Grant.

“The Village of Brewster is excited to begin implementation of Transit Oriented Development and become a thriving social and economic hub of the Harlem Valley once again,” said Mayor Schoenig. “We will strengthen our community and contribute to Putnam County and the Hudson Valley Region’s continuous improvement. This $2,000,000 Empire State Development Grant comes at a perfect time as we are on the leading edge of transformation, and in continued partnership with Putnam County, Covington Development, LLC and the supportive partners who have helped us along the way, we can invigorate our community and become a vibrant place to live, work and play."

Watch the video to see interviews with Odell and Schoenig about the project, which is aiming for a late 2018 or 2019 groundbreaking date.
