YONKERS, N.Y. – A patient is being tested for a possible case of Ebola at St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Yonkers after traveling from West Africa to Westchester County and suffering fever-like symptoms.

Various tests are being run on the currently unidentified patient, including those for Ebola, malaria and other diseases that are rampant and prominent in certain African nations.

The Westchester County Department of Health has since stepped in to assist doctors at St. Joseph’s, and have quarantined the patient to ensure that any symptoms aren’t spread to other patients.

“The Westchester County Department of Health is working with the hospital and treating physician to evaluate a patient with fever who recently traveled to an Ebola-affected country,” Dr. Sherlita Amler stated. “All appropriate infection control measures are in place, including isolation and personal equipment for healthcare providers.

“The most common diagnosis in travelers with fever who have recently returned from the Ebola-affected countries has been malaria.”

According to reports, the patient is from a country on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Ebola warning list.
