Powdered Titanium Reaction Causes Fire At Southeast Lab

SOUTHEAST, N.Y. -- A Wednesday fire in a Southeast lab was caused when a worker opened a container of powdered titanium that reacted negatively with moisture in the air, Brewster Fire Chief Thomas Leather told Daily Voice.

The fire was contained to the room and there was no damage to the building's exterior, the chief added.

“There was no residual damage to the building,”

Materion, a company that handles metals used for electronics, occupies the building, Leather said.

The building is located at 42 Mt. Ebo Drive South, which is at the road's dead end.

Mutual aid, according to Leather, was provided by Putnam Lake's fire department and Putnam County's hazmat team.

An employee at the lab who handled the container was injured, Leather added.
