Sierra Club leaders from the Lower Hudson Group have announced its endorsement of incumbent Democrat Peter Harckham in the race for Westchester County Board of Legislators, District 2. Harckham is the current majority leader of the Board.
The Sierra Club said that Harckhams environmental achievements include expanded plastics recycling legislation, several programs to protect the watershed and its aquifers, alternative energy solutions and open space preservation.
Harckham led the State in the restriction of phosphorous in lawn fertilizer, a key contributor to toxicity in storm water runoff in rivers and streams, the club said. He secured funding for septic management and updating sewage treatment plants to protect local water supplies and to remove nitrogen from the Long Island Sound. The club also noted that Harckham is an aggressive opponent to the practice of hydrofracking, the gas drilling method which opponents say destroys aquifers, surrounding ecosystems and homeowner property value.
The club also cited Harckhams greenhouse gas inventory program, which they say identified emissions sources and workable solutions to reduce footprints by using solar panels, centralized energy and climate controls in county buildings. Harckham renewed Agricultural District zoning to promote organic farming and protect family farms.
