Stepping-Up at North Salem's Exceptional School

NORTH SALEM - Families, friends and faculty gathered on Thursday morning at the Westchester Exceptional Children's School in Purdys to celebrate the year's progress.

The ceremonies opened with the Pledge of Allegiance, the National Anthem, and the singing of the school song, "Inch by Inch."

The girl graduates wore yellow caps and gowns while the boys donned blue caps and gowns. Before receiving their diplomas from associate director Linda Zinn, each graduate made a short speech.

The graduating class of seven students included Alicia Maldonado, Cathy Walker, Jerome Oaddams, Paul Berman, John Kinney, Chad DenDanto and Richard Leach.

Special awards were given to: Cathy Walker (Achievement), Chad DenDanto (School Spirit), John Kinney (Citizenship), Richie Leach (Most Improved Behavior), Jerome Oaddams (Most Enthusiastic Singer), Tink Barfield ("Always a Good Day Person Award"), Alicia Maldonado (Dedication, Excellence and Commitment) and Paul Berman (Educational Achievement).

Other students of the school received various awards for Individual Achievements. Each and every student was "stepping up."
