Titicus Reservoir Reaches New Low

NORTH SALEM, N.Y. - Donald Gambino was cycling along Route 116 recently when an offensive odor attracted his attention to the reservoir. There, he saw the level of water at its lowest ebb in his 17 years living in North Salem. Local resident Edris Scherer reported a similar experience.

The Titicus Reservoir has been intentionally drawn down, said Michael Saucier of the New York State Department of Environmental Protection , because the side banks have been eroding. A “float stabilization” project is under way, which involves stabilizing the embankment by adding rock.

Saucier could not estimate when the project would be completed, but said the water will not be drawn down any further.

Once the work is finished, the water level will return to normal.
