NORTH SALEM, N.Y. - Here are a few of the top stories from this week around North Salem:
- North Salem High School senior Noemi Bechu won the New York State Championship in the 200-meter run on Saturday at Middletown High School. Bechu also broke her own school record for the event. She holds six school records in track and field and “is the most decorated runner in North Salem history,” according to an email from North Salem Booster Club secretary Mark Ribaudo.
- David Johnson conducted a tour around North Salem’s chambers and mounds recently . Johnson is an archaeological researcher and prolific writer on the subject. Members of the New England Antiquities Research Association (NEARA) have been studying the enigmatic structures for half a century and have come up with several theories that Johnson shared on the tour.
- North Salem High School’s OPTIONS (Opportunities for Professional Training In-and-Out of North Salem) students made their final presentations to fellow students, teachers, parents and community members on Thursday evening. The goal of the OPTIONS program, a credit-bearing course, is to provide seniors with experience in fields that might interest them as future professions, occupations or trades. Faculty and community mentors help students acquire knowledge and experience in a chosen field, so they can ultimately decide whether they want to pursue it.
