West Point Comes to North Salem

NORTH SALEM, N.Y. - Thanks to the Friends of the Ruth Keeler Library , the West Point Academy Wind Quintet will be in concert at the library on Sunday, September 25 at 3 p.m. The concert is open to all.

The Wind Quintet is just one component of the West Point Concert Band . Other ensembles include the Jazz Knights, the Hellcats, the Woodwind Quintet, and the Concert Band. The West Point Band is comprised of graduates from America’s finest music schools. They are full-time members of the U. S. Army and full-time musicians. There are no cadets in the band.

The tradition of a United States military band started during the American Revolution, when fifers and drummers were stationed with the Minutemen on Constitution Island in the Hudson River. When the Military Academy was officially established at West Point in 1802, there was a need for fifers, drummers and buglers to drill new cadets and “provide an audible order to their duty day.” Today’s West Point Band continues to be an official organization whose goal is to provide musical support for the Corps of Cadets.

The program for the Ruth Keeler recital will open with a short Scherzo by Eugene Bozza, followed by the jazzy Spanish piece called Aires Tropicales by Paquito D’Rivera. Three short wind pieces by Jacques Ibert will come next and the concert will conclude with a Quintet by the Danish composer, Carl Nielsen.

There is no admission charge. Space is limited, however, so you must have a ticket to enter. Tickets are available at the library. In true military fashion, the concert will begin promptly at 3 p.m., so be there by 2:45 p.m. or risk losing your seat.

This is only one of the many activities sponsored by the Friends of the Ruth Keeler Library. They are always happy to have new members. Membership is $20 a year.
