Westchester Unemployment Rate Plunges In February, Say State Officials

New York state officials on Tuesday released preliminary unemployment rates for February that show Lower Hudson Valley counties reflecting the overall drop in unemployment throughout the state compared to February 2015.

The state's unemployment rate was 5.4 percent last month, compared to 6.3 percent in February 2015.

State officials said the private sector job count increased by 122,700 jobs from February 2015 to February 2016. The number of private sector jobs for February was 7,884,000, which state officials say is a record high.

At 4.1 percent, Putnam County had one of the lowest unemployment rates in the state in February. It dropped from 5 percent last February, state officials said. 

Rockland County is close behind with 4.2 percent, which is a significant drop from 5.2 in February 2015. Dutchess County was at 4.4 percent in February, dropping from 5.3 percent last February. 

Westchester County had 4.4 percent unemployment last month, a decline from 5.2 percent unemployment last February.
