What's Happening in North Salem This Weekend

NORTH SALEM, N.Y. – The final performances of "Days of Wine and Roses" at The Schoolhouse Theater and a vocal concert by North Salem resident Linda Eder at the Ridgefield Playhouse are among the events planned for this weekend.

Friday, March 23

• Somers Tremor Group – 1:30 - 4 p.m. A two-part workshop and lecture about essential tremor, a neurological disorder that causes hands to shake, heads to bob and voices to quaver. The first part will center on tai chi instruction with expert George Chen. The second part will be a presentation by representatives of the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research. This event takes place at the Somers Library in Reis Park on Route 139 in Somers. There is no charge, but a $10 donation is requested for the tai chi session.

• "Days of Wine and Roses" – 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, 3 p.m. Sunday. JP Miller’s intense drama, "Days of Wine and Roses," was an Oscar-winning film starring Jack Lemmon and Lee Remick. Now you can see the original play at The Schoolhouse Theater. The Sunday matinee with be followed by a talk-back featuring the cast, the crew and a special guest, award-winning playwright and screenwriter Loring Mandel. Tickets are $35. These are the final performances of this play. The Schoolhouse Theater is at 3 Owens Road in Croton Falls. 

Saturday, March 24

• Greenhouse Gardening – 10 a.m. - noon. This is the first of a three-session workshop, concentrating on how to start seeds successfully, how to propagate plants and how to prepare for spring planting. Additional sessions will be on Saturday, March 31; and Saturday, April 7. The fee is $60 including supplies. To register, call (914) 864-7268. Lasdon Park and Arboretum is on Route 35 in Somers.

• Bilingual Story Time – 10:30 a.m. at the Ruth Keeler Memorial Library. Barbara will entertain children of all ages with Spanish-English songs and stories. The library is at 276 Titicus Road in North Salem.

• Westchester Oratorio Society – 1 p.m. Conductor Benjamin Niemczyk will conduct the oratorio in a 45-minute program of music by American and European composers. A tea and a private tour of the main house will follow. The fee is $25 per person. The concert is at Somers’ Muscoot Farm on Route 100.

• Vocal Concert – 8 p.m. at the Ridgefield Playhouse. Broadway and cabaret performer Linda Eder will sing songs from her new album, “Now.” In addition, Bernard’s Restaurant (22 West Lane, Ridgefield, Conn.) will offer a Dinner-and-a-Show prix-fixe menu, available either before or after the performance. Plus Sarah’s Wine Bar (upstairs at Bernard’s) will treat ticket holders to a free glass of wine with dinner, beginning at 5 p.m. The concert is at the Ridgefield Playhouse, 80 E. Ridge, Ridgefield.

Sunday, March 25

• Caring for Rabbits – noon - 3 p.m. Join the 4-H Rabbiteers at Muscoot Farm to learn how to handle and care for pet rabbits. Muscoot Farm is on Route 100 in Somers.

Vernal Pool Hike – 1 p.m. Muscoot Farm’s resident naturalist will lead a hike to the vernal pools to see wood frogs and fairy shrimp. Dress for the weather and wear sturdy shoes. Meet at the reception center. Muscoot Farm, Route 100, Somers.

Bird Watching - 3 p.m. The North Salem Improvement Society will present a talk by the Audubon Society's John Hannan and a special display of native and local botanical art by Linda Cerrone. Refreshments will be served. The Ruth Keeler Library, 274 Titicus Road, North Salem.
