Woman, 35, Seriously Injured In Crash On I-84 Near North Salem

PUTNAM COUNTY, N.Y. --  A 35-year-old Bridgeport, Conn., woman suffered head trauma and a fractured hip on Tuesday in a two-vehicle accident that result in the closure of I-84 for part of the afternoon, according to state police.

Marie D. Rene was traveling on the ramp from Interstate 684 northbound to Interstate 84 eastbound when she lost control of her 2006 Hyundai Sante Fe sport-utility vehicle near the end of the ramp, police said.  Her vehicle left the ramp and entered the grass divider which separates the entry ramp from the eastbound lanes of Interstate 84, according to police.

The SUV then struck a ditch within the divider, became airborne and entered the eastbound lanes of Interstate 84 where it struck a 2006 Chevrolet pick-up truck. The Chevrolet spun onto the south shoulder of the highway before it left the roadway. Rene's vehicle then completely crossed the eastbound lanes, entered the center median of the highway and rolled over. Rene, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected from the vehicle and onto the center median, police said.

The driver of the pick-up truck was not injured.  

Rene was transported by Stat-Flight helicopter to Westchester Medical Center, where she was listed in critical condition late Tuesday night. 

The accident remains under investigation by state police.

I-84 was closed in order to land the Stat-Flight helicopter which airlifted the victim to the hospital., according to police.

One or more lanes were closed in both directions for more than two hours as members of the State Police Collision Reconstruction conducted their scene investigation.  

Troopers were assisted at the scene by members of the Brewster Fire Department, Putnam County Sheriff's Office and TransCare EMS.
