The pet food store's exterior was charred and a building frame was exposed.

Neighboring stores had smoke and water damage, according to Mahopac Fire Capt. John Deagan.

The fire department's dispatch came at approximately 2:45 a.m., according to Mahopac Ex-Capt. Michael Klein.

Klein was seen retrieving a cat named Daisy later in the morning. Deagan was unaware of there being any unaccounted for pets and said there were no injuries.

It took about 45 minutes to an hour to put the fire out, Deagan said.

Mutual aid, according to Deagan, was provided by fire companies from Mahopac Falls, Carmel, Croton Falls, Somers, Brewster, Lake Mohegan and Yorktown Heights. Carmel Police and the Putnam County Sheriff's Department were also present, according to Deagan.

Putnam County's Bureau of Emergency Services is doing an investigation, according to Klein.

The Feed Barn is located in Mahopac Village Center, a shopping center that has occupants ranging from A&P to a post office. It is located near the border with Somers.
