Man Assaults Motorcyclist With Butt End Of Rifle In Verplanck, Say Police

CORTLANDT, N.Y. -- A Verplanck man faces multiple charges after state police say he assaulted a motorcyclist with the butt end of a rifle outside his home on Broadway in Verplanck on Sunday.

Joseph Crawford, 33, has been charged with second-degree assault (a Class D felony), second-degree menacing and reckless endangerment.

Following a detailed investigation, it was discovered that Crawford confronted the victim who was outside of Crawford's residence on a motorcycle, police said. Crawford displayed a rifle and the victim fell off of the motorcycle. A physical altercation ensued where Crawford struck the victim with the butt of the weapon several times resulting in a head injury. Crawford also fired two rounds from the firearm at the victim’s feet. The victim was not injured as a result of the rifle being fired.

The victim was transported to Hudson Valley Hospital and treated for lacerations to the head and face.

Crawford was also transported to the Hudson Valley Hospital where he was treated and released with minor abrasions.

Crawford was arraigned before the Town of Cortlandt Court and remanded to the Westchester County Jail in lieu of $20,000 bail. He is scheduled to re-appear in the Town of Cortlandt Court at a later date.
