Man Caught With Crack, Pot In I-84 Stop

A drug-sniffing state police canine helped lead to the arrest of a Dutchess County man who was busted with crack-cocaine during a speeding stop on I-84.

At approximately noon on Wednesday afternoon, state police conducted a traffic stop of Beacon resident Darren Atkins, 56, in Fishkill when he was spotted speeding.

During the subsequent stop, a state police narcotics detection canine alerted to the vehicle, and a search of the car determined that Atkins was in possession of marijuana and crack-cocaine. Police said that Atkins also showed signs of drug impairment during the stop.

Atkins was arrested by state police troopers and charged with a felony count of criminal possession of a controlled substance and driving while ability impaired by drugs, a misdemeanor. He was also cited for unlawful possession of marijuana, a violation.

Following arraignment, Atkins was remanded to the Dutchess County Jail without bail. He is due to appear in the Town of Fishkill Court on Jan. 2 to answer the charges.
