Man Charged With Cashing Counterfeit Checks In Carmel, Southeast

CARMEL, N.Y. -- A Bronx man has been charged after a New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation revealed he had cashed several counterfeit checks in Carmel and Southeast, according to New York state police.

Byron P. Kempson, 29, was arrested by state police from the Brewster barracks on Tuesday, March 17, for criminal possession of a forged instrument in the second degree and grand larceny in the fourth degree, both felonies, state police said.

An investigation revealed that Kempson had cashed several counterfeit checks  totaling $3,750 at the Tompkins Mahopac Bank branches located on Route 22 in Southeast and also on Route 6N in Carmel, state police said.

Kempson was arraigned at the Town of Southeast Court, where Judge Richard Vercollone remanded him to the Putnam County Jail in lieu of $20,000 cash bail or $40,000 bond.   His next court appearance is scheduled for Tuesday, March 24 at 6 p.m. in the Town of Carmel Court.
