NORTH SALEM, N.Y. -- A 26-year-old Florida man has been sentenced to 25 years to life for a murder that occurred in North Salem.
Patrick Smith was sentenced Wednesday after being convicted of two counts of murder in the second degree, one count of kidnapping in the first degree, one count of robbery in the second degree and one count of unlawful imprisonment, according to Westchester District Attorney Janet DiFiore.
Smith was sentenced for his involvement in the death of 65-year-old Epifanio Medina, whose body was discovered in North Salem in June 2011.
Two horseback riders discovered the decomposing body of Medina in the woods of North Salem that June according to DiFiore.
Medina had been living in New Jersey at the time. He was known to carry large amounts of cash and wore a lot of flashy jewelry, DiFiore said. DiFiore said he frequented a New Jersey liquor store and was last seen exiting that store a week before his body was found.
Three other people have been convicted for Medina's murder. Travis Morin, a 26-year-old, was convicted of one count of robbery in the second degree and one count of unlawful imprisonment and will be sentenced March 19.
Charles Blanchard, a 23-year-old, pleaded guilty to being an accomplice and was sentenced to 18 years in prison.
Jessica French, a 26-year-old, pleaded guilty to robbery in the second degree and will be sentenced on March 19.
“This defendant, along with his convicted accomplices, in a methodical and calculated scheme spanning the east coast, traveled to Northern New Jersey for the singular purpose of abducting and robbing their victim. Methodical investigative work by the New York State Police, forensic analysis by the Westchester County Department of Labs and Research and a complicated and complex prosecution came together to hold all these defendants accountable,” said DiFiore.
