At about 12:25 p.m., officers were dispatched to Yankee Peddler and Pawn at 139 Main St. The Police Department had been informed that William Oboy was inside the store, and there were multiple warrants for his arrest.

As an officer approached Oboy to confirm his identity, Oboy became physically combative and resisted the officer's efforts to take him into custody, police said.

Oboy actively fought with the officer and broke free, police said. The suspect fled on foot, with the officer pursuing him down Main Street, police said.

Oboy dropped a black backpack as he ran onto Bank Street, near the library, police said. The officer lost sight of Oboy on Bank Street as he headed toward Foster Street, police said.

Officers established a perimeter with Oboy inside it, police said. Oboy was seen running again, and officers apprehended him as he attempted to climb a fence, police said.

Oboy was taken into custody and charged with possession of a controlled substance, interfering with the duties of an officer, assault on a police officer, criminal possession of a firearm, possession of burglary tools and possession of narcotics in this incident. He was held on $100,000 bond.

Inside the backpack, officers located, among other items, narcotics not prescribed to Oboy as well as a revolver and knives.

One Danbury police officer was injured in the incident with non-life-threatening injuries and transported to Danbury Hospital. The officer was treated and released from the hospital.

There were five separate warrants for Oboy's arrest, on the following charges, police said:

  • Credit card theft, illegal use of a credit card, second-degree failure to appear; $7,500 bond;
  • Possession of a controlled substance and first-degree failure to appear; $3,500 bond;
  • Speeding and failure to respond to an infraction; $250 bond;
  • Possession of controlled substance, possession of narcotics, first-degree failure to appear and violation of probation; $5,000 bond; and
  • Failure to display plates, operation of a motor vehicle under suspension and second-degree failure to appear; $500 bond.
