A driver called police to the area near Veterans Park early Sunday morning to report a hit-and-run accident. The driver told police that his car was struck by a silver Honda, and the other car had fled the scene, according to police reports.
Officers saw a silver Honda crossing the Stroffolino Bridge with a flat tire and front-end damage, police said. The car’s driver eventually pulled over on Fort Point Street, according to the report.
An officer pulled his patrol car in front of the Honda to prevent him from leaving the scene. After the officer got out of his car, the driver accelerated forward, causing damage to the passenger side of the patrol car, police said.
Juan Sarmiento-Arizaga, 25, of Ridge Street was then pulled out of the Honda and arrested. He was bleeding from a cut on his forehead and appeared intoxicated, and was taken to Norwalk Hospital for treatment, according to police reports.
While in the hospital, Sarmiento-Arizaga was charged with attempted assault on a police officer, interfering with police and disobeying an officer’s signal. The initial accident is still under investigation, and charges are pending from that case, police said.
