The house had been part of the farm owned by Samuel Field, an early settler in the area.

Firefighters from Croton Falls, South Salem, Goldens Bridge and Brewster battled the blaze and were able to prevent its spreading to nearby brush and trees, but the house itself was destroyed, with only its chimney left standing.

The following day four teenagers, one from Purdys, one from Somers, and two from Brewster, were charged with third-degree criminal trespass and fourth-degree criminal mischief, said Investigator Glenn Walsh of the New York State Police, Southeast Barracks.

The names of the accused have not been released because of their ages. All charges are classified as misdemeanors. The teens are scheduled to appear in court in mid-January, Walsh added.
