Putnam County Sheriff Robert Langley, Jr. announced the arrest of a 17-year-old resident - whose name will not be released due to his age - after he allegedly intentionally caused damage to the property of several others in his Cold Spring neighborhood.
The Sheriff’s Office received reports of criminal mischief on Saturday, March 31, from residents in Cold Spring, prompting an investigation by local and county law enforcement officials after “unknown persons had spent the overnight hours causing destruction and vandalism” in Cold Spring and Nelsonville.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, investigators canvassed the area and ascertained surveillance footage from local businesses, which led them to the 17-year-old suspect, who was charged with one count of felony criminal mischief for intentionally damaging the book deposit box at the Butterfield Library and one count of misdemeanor criminal mischief for intentionally damaging a basketball hoop owned by a private citizen on Kemble Avenue.
Investigators said that the investigation is ongoing, and any local residents or business owners who have not been contacted by law enforcement and may have been the victim of vandalism has been asked to contact the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office and ask for investigator Paul Piazza, Jr.
Following arraignment, the teenager was released on his own recognizance. He is due back in court later this month to answer the charges.
