Teen Charged In Crash That Killed Man On I-84

BROOKFIELD, Conn. — A teenager from New Jersey has been charged with second-degree manslaughter in a rollover crash on I-84 last year that killed a 59-year-old man from Brookfield, state police said.

Erica Weinman, 19, of Aberdeen, N.J., was driving east on I-84 in Middlebury when she lost control of her Ford Escape at about 10 p.m. Oct. 25, 2015, state police said. 

Her car crossed the center median and slammed into a westbound Porsche Cayman driven by 59-year old Kevin Klein of Brookfield, state police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene, which was near the South Street Bridge overpass. A passenger in his car was taken to the Waterbury Hospital for treatment, state police.

Weinman and her teenage passenger were taken to St. Mary's Hospital in Waterbury for treatment, state police said. 

Both cars were severely damaged, and the Porsche rolled onto its roof, state police said. 

Weinman, who was 18 at the time of the fatal crash, was also charged with driving under the influence and failure to drive in the established lane, state police said.

She was taken into custody in New Jersey as a fugitive from justice, state police said. Weinman was transported from Monmouth County Jail to Troop A in Southbury on Friday. She was arrested and released on $100,000 court -set bond for an appearance in Waterbury Superior Court on Oct. 26.
