NORTH SALEM, N.Y. – An unknown person or persons drove onto North Salem High School’s field hockey field Tuesday night, causing serious damage to the playing surface. According to a coach and a member of the maintenance staff, this has happened several times in the past. As a result, the team cannot access the entire field for practice sessions. Both complainants are concerned about future incidents and requested the school gates be locked at night to prevent further trespassing.

The North Salem Police also reported the following incidents:

Squatting Caretaker: A Finch Road resident reported the presence of a squatter at a nearby property Monday. Investigation showed the subject was hired as a caretaker. However, he was supposed to leave the property at 5 p.m. every day. The property-owner then asked the subject to vacate the premises by Friday. Sgt. Andrew Brown agreed to inspect the property on behalf of the owner to make sure instructions had been followed.

Odor Detected: Homeowners on Valeria Circle became alarmed when the home’s CO detector sounded Wednesday afternoon. Members of the Goldens Bridge Fire Department responded, detected the odor, and attributed it to fumes from a gas-fueled power washer, being used to clean the exterior. The firemen checked out the premises and declared it safe.
