Turkey Breaks Into North Salem House, Spares Dog

NORTH SALEM, N.Y. – A passerby’s report of a smashed window sent investigators to a residence near Mills Road and Great Oaks Lane on Monday, where it was deduced that the crash had been caused by a wayward turkey, found sheepishly hiding behind the living room couch. No one except the dog was at home when the turkey dropped in police said. The home’s occupant managed to extricate the perp upon her return, with no harm done except to the window.

The North Salem Police also reported the following incidents:

  • The lock of a detached two-car garage at a home on Purdys’ Chestnut Drive was forced open, according to a police report submitted on Monday. A water pump, room heater, extension cord and several golf clubs were taken. There were no witnesses nor are there any suspects.
  • A man trying to install a water meter downstairs in an unoccupied Westview Avenue residence on Friday was bowled over when water came gushing through the main water line, causing a flood in the basement. The man explained that he thought the water service had been shut off at the street. Environmental services and the Office of Supervisor Warren Lucas were notified. The community’s water supply had to be temporarily shut off so a broken street valve could be repaired.
  • The caretaker of a Norton Lane property reported on April 30 that a locked gate had been broken open, and one or more ATVs had driven onto the property. North Salem police informed all patrol officers to be on heightened alert for a recurrence.
