A chain-reaction crash with two fatalities caused the hours-long closure of a stretch of I-684 on Saturday in Northern Westchester.
State police troopers responded to the motor vehicle crash on southbound I-684, south of Exit 4 (Route 172) in Bedford, involving six vehicles, at about 2:30 p.m.
Preliminary investigation revealed that a box truck operated by 59-year-old Henry Valencia of the Bronx was unable to stop due to icy road conditions and struck another vehicle which was stopped in traffic.
The operator of the vehicle, 40-year-old Kerry Hamill of Lee, MA, and a 3-year-old male passenger, were both killed in the crash, state police said. Hamill's wife, 40-year-old Lauren Pellegrino, survived the crash and was transported to Westchester Medical Center for minor injuries, state police said.
The initial collision created a chain reaction involving four additional vehicles. Occupants of the four additional vehicles were transported to local hospitals for minor injuries.
The stretch of I-684 remained closed through late Saturday night during an accident investigation.
