NORTH SALEM, N.Y. -- Democratic candidate Martin Aronchick has won a special election for a North Salem Town Board seat by just 34 votes, unofficial results show.

The results, which are from the Westchester County Board of Elections, show that Aronchick received 884 votes to 850 votes for Republican incumbent William Monti.

Absentee and affidavit ballots were counted on Friday, Nov. 14, according to the Board of Elections, and the results were updated to include them. Prior to the update, Aronchick was also shown to have a slim lead.

Results will be certified and made official later this month, according to the Board of Elections.

Monti was appointed to the Town Board following the death of Councilman Bruce Buchholtz. He and Aronchick competed to fill out the remainder of the term. The council seat will be up for a regular election for a full term in November 2015.

Reached for comment, Aronchick replied that he was "delighted," honored and humbled by the result. He also said that he hopes to be worthy of the electorate's support.

Monti, when reached for comment, was critical of how he was treated prior to the election. He contends that people made false allegations against him regarding development.
