Maloney (D-Cold Spring) narrowly edged Hayworth (R-Mount Kisco) for his seat in the 18th District in the 2012 election, besting her by less than 10,000 votes as he earned 48.7 percent of the vote against Hayworth’s 45 percent.
Hayworth, the former representative of the now abolished 19th congressional district, was the victim of the state’s redistricting in 2012 when she lost to Maloney, who was elected for the first time. Hayworth will officially earn Republican, Conservative nominations at the primary, while Maloney will run under the Democratic and Working Family Parties.
Both candidates are running unopposed in their party’s primaries, and will each be represented on the ballot at the general election in November. The 18th District includes all of Orange and Putnam counties, as well as parts of southern Dutchess and northeastern Westchester counties.
There will be no other Westchester politicians on the ballot as New Yorkers head to the polls to vote in the primary election, though some races are expected in November at the general election.
Incumbent U.S. Rep. Eliot Engel (D-Bronx) is poised to run unopposed in the 16th district, though longtime incumbent Nita Lowey (D-Bronx) is being challenged by Republican Chris Day of New City. Lowey first was elected in 1988 and the think tank FairVote.org projects her to win re-election easily.
Polls will open at 6 a.m. on Tuesday throughout Westchester, and will close at 9 p.m.
