Now, it's official.

Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano is running for State Senate.

Spano formally announced his candidacy for the 37th Senate District Wednesday after weeks of speculation. He joins a growing list of Democratic candidates that includes Assemblywoman Shelley Mayer, teacher Kat Brezler, and Bedford Supervisor Chris Burdick. The seat became vacant after George Latimer was elected County Executive.

“We’ve turned Yonkers around during my six years as mayor,” said Spano. “I want to put that record of success and leadership to work for the people of the 37th District. “I’ll work to get Albany’s attention to our needs, and you can bet I’ll stand up for Westchester values against the assault we are under from the Trump administration.

Spano said his priorities will be to fight for a fair share of education funding for Westchester school districts, to ensure the area economy remains strong, and to hold the line on taxes.

Spano was elected mayor in 2011 and is in the middle of his second term.

A date for a special election has not been called.

The 37th Senate District covers the cities of New Rochelle, Rye, White Plains, Yonkers and the towns of Bedford, Harrison, Mamaroneck, North Castle, Rye, Eastchester.
