NORTH SALEM, N.Y. - In recognition of National Fire Prevention Week , members of the Croton Falls Fire Department visited the PQ School on Tuesday to demonstrate fire fighting equipment and discuss safety actions.
Class by class, the children marched to the front of the school where Chief John Blauvelt, in full formal uniform, awaited them along with several other firemen.
Second Lieutenant Dan Dreyer of Company 3 ushered the class around the fire truck, pointing out where the ladders, shovels, axes, hoses and other paraphernalia were housed. The water tank holds 1,000 gallons of water, he said. Do you know how much that is? When your mother put milk on your cereal this morning, she probably poured it from a gallon container. This tank holds 1,000 of those containers!
One child replied, I had toast for breakfast. Others added, I had eggs, and I had yogurt.
Undaunted, Lt. Dreyer continued, Who knows what to do in an emergency?
You get low and go, was one little girls proper response.
And who do you tell?
Mommy Daddy brothers and sisters .
Who has a meeting place? If you dont have one you should talk about it tonight at dinner and set one up. Its a good idea to have a place outside.
We meet by the table, a boy responded.
Thats good, said Dreyer, but you must make sure the table is there in the wintertime as well.
Never go back into the house for your pets, he added. Theyll probably be out before you because they can run faster.
Piece by piece, one of the firemen then regaled himself in full firefighting attire. We look scary with this stuff on, Dreyer explained, and we sound funny. But now you know not to be afraid if you see a fireman.
As the grand finale, Lt. Dreyer asked, Now, who wants to go for a ride?
Not a single child turned down the offer. So they all mounted the fire engine and drove around the school with the siren blasting.
