Dads and Daughters Rock at North Salem School Ball

NORTH SALEM, N.Y. - The Pequenakonck School gymnasium was packed with couples on Friday night as close to 200 fathers, uncles, or other significant males, escorted girls from 5 to 10-year-olds to the first annual Sweetheart Ball. The girls wore their finest party dresses, the men spruced up, and the room rocked with music by DJ Joey C.

A number of girls had corsages, some escorts wore boutonnieres, and one father even dug out his tuxedo for the occasion.

“We’ve really been looking forward to this. My wife’s school did it when she was a girl,” said Kevin Hanney, father of 7-year-old Elizabeth. The Hanney family moved to North Salem just a few days before Elizabeth was born. How did it feel to have a date with her father? “It’s good,” said Elizabeth. “Well, make that ‘it’s great.’”

Third grade friends Jillian Rei and Danielle Pakula wore matching outfits for the evening. “We like to match because people always ask if we’re twins,” said Jillian. “We’re having a lot of fun because we love to dance,” added Danielle.

Most of the girls love to dance. In fact, the dance floor was jammed with little girls doing the “Cha Cha Slide” while the escorts stood on the sidelines and chatted. DJ Joey C reported that the most popular request of the evening was “Sexy and I Know It,” performed by Lmfao.

In between dance sets the crowd wandered into the refreshment rooms to enjoy some lemonade and ice cream. Elsewhere, escorts and dates posed in front of velvet draperies to have professional photographs taken. The pictures will be posted on the PQ website this week. The event itself was sponsored by the North Salem Parent-Teacher Organization .

“This is our first annual Sweetheart Ball and almost 60 percent of the girls in the student body are here,’ said Principal Roberta Reiner. “In a few months we’re going to do a bowling night for mothers and sons.

“It’s been the talk of the town at PQ,” she added. “Once the word spreads, it’s going to get bigger and bigger.”
