NORTH SALEM, N.Y. - Julie Cherico is a 14-year resident of North Salem, with two children in North Salem schools. She is an attorney in partnership with her husband, John. Their offices are in White Plains.

Cherico entered law as a specialist in land use and zoning but now specializes in real estate and children’s advocacy. She often represents children in connection with custody and visitation rights and matters of juvenile delinquency.

The Cherico family are parishioners at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Croton Falls and enjoy outdoor activities together. A weekly highlight in the Cherico household, she says, “is the 'Friday Night Pizza' tradition and watching the Food Network.”

What would you bring to the Board based upon your life experience as a parent or community member, or in your occupation or profession?

As the mother of two young children in the School District, I believe that I would bring a new perspective to the issues and the needs facing our younger children. Additionally, as a practicing attorney, I am faced with the task of problem-solving on a daily basis. I believe these skills would benefit the School Board.

Considering the current budgetary limitations, what should the Board's main priorities be?

In a word, academics. In my humble opinion, I believe our priority should be providing the strongest curriculum that our resources can handle, one in which our students will be able to compete with the world, not just Westchester County.

What special challenges are there in the North Salem Central School District and how would you address them?

I believe that our most special attribute is also our most challenging and that is the size of the School District.  We continue to have reduced enrollment at the kindergarten level. While in some ways this is helpful, in others it is detrimental. I believe we should want to increase our enrollment and we can do that by having a competitive school district that is well-known and well-regarded throughout Westchester and Putnam Counties.

Is there any particular project or program you’d like to see introduced to the educational system?

I would like to see cutting-edge technology introduced into our educational system. I believe our district should develop a world-class computer science (software design and development) curriculum. Teaching our children programming languages such as Java and C# are just as important presently as teaching any foreign language.
