SOMERS, N.Y. – Nearly all of the 140 students in the 2012 graduating class at Kennedy Catholic High School will be heading off to college in the fall.
“The trend this year is toward more prestigious schools, like Notre Dame, Boston College and Dartmouth,” said Alumni Director Alex Malecki. There also are more students graduating with advanced placement credits this year, he added.
Nearly 20 percent of this year’s class graduated with Regents Diplomas of Honor and nearly 25 percent was elected to the National Honor Society.
As a group, they won $12.8 million in scholarships, exceeding last year’s total by $900,000, although this year’s class was smaller by 13 students.
Malecki credits Principal the Rev. Mark Vaillancourt with improving the curriculum since his arrival at Kennedy four years ago.
“And our guidance department stays with the kids for four years, trying to work on their strengths and weaknesses and to find the right fit for everyone,” Malecki said.
The most unusual college choice this year was made by Katherine Lange of Bedford Hills, who will be going to the University of St. Andrews in Scotland to study international relations and management.
