After that day is used, if another snow day is needed, the district will convert Monday, April 6 from a Professional Development Day to a full student day.
If days are needed after that, they will be taken from the spring vacation, beginning Monday, March 30.
How is the decision to close, delay or dismiss early made?
In North Salem, the Superintendent makes the decision after a thorough process of gathering information and collaboration.
The decisions fall into two categories, known conditions and forecast conditions. The North Salem schools have two private forecasters under contract to independently provide forecasts. They provide updates 48 hours in advance of the storm, and during the storm regarding post storm conditions.
Between 4 a.m. and 4:30 a.m., Dr. Kenneth Freeston participates in two conference calls for area school superintendents. A forecaster provides detailed town-specific predictions.
On days where the snow is already falling, or has fallen, the decision to delay or open is dependent on the respective town road crews and conditions.
The decisions with the greatest risk of being inaccurate happen when the snow is not predicted to start until after school normally starts.
Each district's decision to open, close, delay or dismiss early is based on the window of time buses are on the roads in their respective districts and what the conditions are predicted to be at those times.
While the decision making process might appear to be complicated, the single most important variable is safety.
