North Salem Schools Join Mission To Introduce Students To Computer Science

NORTH SALEM, N.Y. -- More than 300 of Pequenakonck Elementary School students and students from North Salem Middle School will join more than one million students world-wide to participate in the Hour of Code in celebration of Computer Science Week during Monday, Dec. 8 through Sunday, Dec. 14.

The Hour of Code, organized by the nonprofit Code.org and more than 100 other organizations, "is a statement that today’s generation of students is ready to learn critical skills for 21st century success."

Throughout the week, participants of all levels from more than 150 countries will work through a series of self-guided tutorials and games. At Pequenakonck, students gather after school to participate in robotics and other STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) activities. Also, this year the Middle School began an after-school Coding Club where students have honed programming skills through Code.org as well through Google's new guided program CS First. Students range from complete beginners to others who are ready to create their first app or game. High school students, teachers and administrators are also encouraged to participate in the Hour of Code during free periods, lunch and after school.
