The How-To Festival is under the direction of Video Broadcasting Club Adviser Cynthia Sandler, and is entered in Cablevision/MSG Varsity’s Charity Champions, a program devised to see who can raise the most money or get the most people interested in supporting a cause. At the end of the local event, a super-size check will be presented to the charity of choice – in this case, the American Red Cross Hurricane Sandy Relief Fund.
“It was chosen because North Salem was especially devastated by the storm, with two lives lost,” Sandler explained.
“The event ties in closely with our District Mission, which focuses on life-long learning and community service,” she added.
How-to sessions will last about 25 minutes and will run simultaneously, so you can mosey around and make your own choices.
Are you intimidated by your computer? Robert Carroccetto, who works at the Apple Computer Genius Bar, will be there to (perhaps) solve your problems.
Hungry? Members of the International Club will be making crepes, just like those they sell to fellow students at the end of the school day.
Technology expert Grace Hott will explain Skype and Oovo, while techie Brenna Brown expounds on Facebook and Twitter.
Meanwhile, Misha Hunt will illustrate still-life drawing, Lily Davis will create origami creatures, Caitlin Franze will demonstrate ballroom dancing and Eliza Sullivan will treat you to some Irish jigs.
Mackenzie Dunn and Alex Fraioli will don their toques in the Home Economics room with a cooking demonstration, while elsewhere, Casey Hordern will be decorating gourmet cupcakes.
Matthew Needle will show off his table tennis techniques and Nate Carminucci his ventriloquy.
On a more practical note, science teacher Thomas DiGaetano will be there to teach about cleaning silver.
The festival is best suited for senior citizens, adults and families. All children must be accompanied by adults at all times.
The How-To Festival will take place at North Salem Middle/High School on Saturday, March 9, from noon to 3 p.m. The event is free, with any donations to The American Red Cross graciously accepted.
