NORTH SALEM, N.Y. – North Salem’s Pequenakonck School Spring Gala, the PTO’s major fundraiser of the year, is scheduled for April 19 at the Salem Golf Club.
“In addition to our usual extracurricular activities, we’re raising money this year for our new ‘Active Bodies - Healthy Minds’ initiative,” said PTO co-president Doris Freedman. “We want to add to our outdoor playground and provide more equipment for use indoors when the kids can’t go out for recess. We’ve had so much severe weather recently that they haven’t been able to go out as much as they used to.”
The demand of the curriculum mandated by New York State cuts into the children’s recess time in general, so there is a need for more active indoor equipment, Freedman added. “For example, there’s a Twister game you can play on a SmartBoard,” she said.
After the gala, a committee of physical education teachers, administrators and parents will decide what to buy, Freedman said.
A large portion of the money raised at the gala comes from the silent auction. The PTO will publish a catalog on its website a week before the gala -- April 11 to 18, Freedman said. Last year, only PQ parents and staff had access to the auction information, but this year it will be available to the entire community.
Among the items up for bid are: jerseys and mini-helmets signed by Eli and Peyton Manning, a South African safari for two, front row seats at a Jets game, tickets to two private Super Bowl pre-parties hosted by DirecTV, tickets to the "Rachael Ray Show," private tennis, guitar and horseback riding lessons, an iPad mini, and Xbox Kinect, a six-hour spring cleaning by Molly Maid, carpenter services for a day and more.
The festivities at the Salem Golf Club will include a cocktail hour with hors d’oeuvres, followed by a buffet dinner, along with dancing to the music of deejay Joey C. A cash bar will be available. Cocktail attire is suggested.
Tickets are $75 per person. The Salem Golf Club is at 18 Bloomer Road, North Salem. For more information contact email@example.com.
