Buchwald started the program three years ago, and this year's program will include cards sent to active servicemen and women overseas.
“It is important that the next generation understands what it means to serve their community, and the Valentines for Vets program helps to do just that in a fun and constructive way,” Buchwald said.
The 2016 program was launched with a ceremony on Thursday at West Patent Elementary School in Bedford Hills with Buchwald and veterans in attendance.
Students sang and performed a traditional African dance, and each veteran in attendance introduced themselves and gave brief comments on the importance of serving the community.
Along with West Patent Elementary, the other schools participating in the program are: George Washington Elementary and Post Road Elementary in White Plains, Meadow Pond Elementary in South Salem, Mount Kisco Elementary, Parsons Memorial School, Harrison Avenue Elementary and S.J. Preston Elementary in Harrison, Pound Ridge Elementary, Pequenakonck Elementary in North Salem, Increase Miller Elementary in Goldens Bridge, Katonah Elementary and Bedford Village Elementary.
