NORTH SALEM, N.Y. North Salems beloved Pequenakonck School principal, Roberta Reiner, has announced her retirement.
Reiner said, Its been a truly memorable experience for me. I think of North Salem as a strong community, where everyone takes care of everyone else. It was a delight being with the children and watching them grow up. Ill take their faces and smiles with me.
Reiner, who began her career in 1998 as the principal of the 575 student elementary school, does not have to take her memories very far. She lives in Katonah and has no plans to move. I have two grandchildren at home, she explained, and Id like to spend more time with them.
However, she does plan to travel for the first time, in September. To somewhere wonderful -- either out west or out of the country. Reiner traditionally gets a haircut in September in preparation for the coming term but this year, she said, I will not make a hair appointment for September.
What was her biggest accomplishment as principal of PQ? Steering the school through the challenging times with all the new regulations and assessments.
The hunt for a replacement is now under way. The school district is advertising the opening in The New York Times and Education Week, as well as on its own website. The deadline for applications is June 1. The new principal will take over at the beginning of August.
Schools Superintendent Ken Freeston said the new principal must meet the conventional expectations of our community, as measured by warmth, creativity, critical thinking, and a devotion to the development of each North Salem child.
This is the end of one era, and the beginning of a new one, Freeston added. We congratulate Roberta on the conclusion of her career, and look forward to welcoming a new member of the family to our district.
