North Salem Voters Approve School Budget; Schurmacher, Giamundo Defeat Papp

An earlier version of this story misstated the amount of the approved 2012-13 budget. The correct amount is $39,253,271.

NORTH SALEM, N.Y. – Incumbents Judith Schurmacher and Paul Giamundo were the winners of Tuesday’s North Salem School Board election, defeating challenger William Papp. Giamundo received a total of 543 votes, Schurmacher, 448, and Papp, 330, according to unofficial results announced by the district Tuesday night.

The $39,253,271 budget for 2012-13 was approved by 62 percent of voters, in a vote of 524 to 313. The budget came in at a 1.99 percent increase over last year’s and keeps within the state’s mandated 2 percent tax levy cap.

Schurmacher, a graduate in finance from Pace University, will be entering her third term on the board. She served the last four years as vice president. She has sat on the fiscal planning committee, the town task force and was one of the founding members of the audit committee. She is a 26-year resident of North Salem and has a son, John, 21, and daughter, Jillian, 16.

Giamundo, an area resident for 20 years, has been on the school board for almost seven. He retired from his career as a school teacher and now runs a construction sales company. Giamundo has two daughters, both of whom attended schools in the district.

On winning the election and the passing of the budget Giamundo said, “It validates our point that the community trusts the work that Judith and I and the team have done for the district. We appreciate the confidence.”

Voters also approved Proposition No. 2, in an unofficial tally of 389 approving votes and 291 opposing votes. The proposition called for the purchase of 10 small school buses, a replacement of boiler plants at the middle/high school, an upgrade to the existing generators at the elementary and middle schools and the installation of a generator at the high school.
