Student Volunteers Needed at the Library

NORTH SALEM, N.Y. - Tuesday will be the next in a series of Community Service Awareness Programs at North Salem High School . The Ruth Keeler Memorial Library will be represented by Director Carolyn Reznick.

“We need volunteers to do lots and lots and lots of things,” she said. “They can work on the children’s programs, do computer work, sort, check out or re-shelve books, or supervise arts and crafts. They can work on our web page. Or decorate the bulletin board. We find out what their strengths and interests are. We’re flexible. We’re willing to work around their schedules, but we do make it a formal process with a sign-in sheet.

“Our volunteers range from young teenagers to people in their 80s. It’s a fun and interesting place to work.”

High School Vice Principal George Bovino describes the community service program as “part of our mission as a school. In class, we encourage creative thinking and problem solving. The volunteer jobs mirror the skills and values they’re learning in school.

“If kids do 30 hours of volunteer work, it goes on their transcripts,” he said. “When you apply to college, it helps you stand out from the others.”

Also on hand Tuesday will be representatives of the North Salem Girl Scouts. Information tables will be set up in the cafeteria during the lunch periods.

Last week, representatives from Pegasus Therapeutic Riding enrolled nearly a dozen possible helpers.
