NORTH SALEM, N.Y. – As 2012 draws to a close, The North Salem Daily Voice is recapping some of the biggest stories of the past year.
Between New York state’s 2 percent tax levy cap , the town’s reluctance to raise taxes and everyone’s desire for the best school system possible, the 2012-13 school budget spent several months under scrutiny before it was finally approved by voters in May.
A continuing point of contention between the Board of Education and parents of Pequenakonck Elementary School fourth-graders concerned the number of children in each class.
Parents strongly campaigned for an additional teacher and smaller classes.
The debate was settled in July, when Superintendent of Schools Kenneth Freeston, under the authorization of the board, hired an additional fourth grade teacher .
In a related story, incumbents Judith Schurmacher and Paul Giamundo were re-elected to the board , defeating the challenger, William Papp.
