Two Brewster Schools Set To Reopen Friday

BREWSTER, N.Y. -- Following almost two full days off, Henry H. Wells Middle School and C.V. Starr Intermediate School students in Brewster might be heading back to class on Friday, Dec. 2, if a generator can be installed in time.

The schools was closed early Wednesday when the school's main electrical supply system failed, leaving students and faculty in the dark, without phones, alarms, heat, security cameras and more at both facilities, school officials said.

Schools Superintendent Valerie Henning-Piedmonte, along with district officials, made the decision to close the schools in an effort to make sure that all students were safe.

A generator is being installed to the main supply system to run critical systems until the entire system can be repaired, said Henning-Piedmonte in a letter to parents.

Tests will be run to make sure all systems are operating once the installation is complete, and a decision will be made whether to open on Friday, she added.

The district will contact parents later Thursday to confirm whether the schools will re-open Friday.

She also assured students that phones and keys left in their lockers are safe and will be available when students return.

"We know that this incident was an inconvenience for parents/guardians of students at WMS and CVS and we thank you for your understanding and cooperation," Henning-Piedmonte said.
