NORTH SALEM, N.Y. – North Salem boys basketball star Umar Singh is The North Salem Daily Voice Athlete of the Month for February after powering the Tigers to the semifinals of the Section 1 Class B tournament with a 21-point, 21-rebound performance in an upset of top-seeded Briarcliff.

Singh also shut down Briarcliff big man Brian Daniels, the Bears’ leading scorer who averaged 19.7 points during the regular season, to just 12 points in the quarterfinal game at the Westchester County Center.

“I noticed that they weren’t rebounding so I just kept crashing the glass and just kept boxing out,” Singh said. “I just ended up with 21, luckily. It was really cool.”

The Tigers also defeated No. 8 Pawling in the opening round before scoring the upset over Briarcliff.

North Salem head coach Henry Sassone said he was not surprised by Singh’s great game against the Bears.

“He’s been doing it all year long,” Sassone said. “He just keeps getting better and better. He’s focused.”

The Tigers ultimately fell to Dobbs Ferry, 72-66, in the semifinals, but Singh still flexed his muscles with 28 points and 13 rebounds.

Sassone said before the game that, win or lose, Singh and the rest of the players should take pride in what they had accomplished.

“(It’s) very special. We played here back on Dec. 28 and Croton beat us. We didn’t play well,” Sassone said. “Pretty much everybody wrote us off and now to make this run and to be here, it’s very special.”
