Chavkin had a perfect game heading into the seventh inning when he walked the leadoff batter. The next batter hit a ball to deep left center field, but junior John Colangelo tracked it down for the catch. The following batter hit a hard ground ball to shortstop Corey Eisenband who threw to Ben Alper at second, and Alper fired to Curtis Rattner at first for a 6-4-3 double play to end the game and clinch the no-hitter for Chavkin. Chavkin faced the minimum of 21 batters.
Chavkin, suffering some arm tightness recently, told coach Mike Rubenfeld earlier in the day that he was not sure how much he would be able to give the team in his start Monday.
“I was expecting to only get three or four innings from Chavkin,” said the coach, “but he showed toughness and grit, wanting to complete the game on his own.”
Chavkin struck out five and stayed ahead of the hitters throughout the game and got some great defense to keep his pitch count down. Second baseman Alper made two great stops to rob the Lions of hits. Rattner also played an outstanding first base, saving a few throws in the dirt, to keep Harvey errorless on the afternoon. For Masters, pitcher Nick Myers was just as dominant for the first five innings. He kept Harvey off balance and kept the Cavaliers from getting anything going on offense until the fifth inning. Austin Forman led off with a single to left field. Jackson Roberts then laid down a beautiful sacrifice bunt, moving Forman into scoring position. Alper drove a hard hit single to right center field to bring home the first run of the game for Harvey.
Harvey added two more insurance runs in the sixth inning when Rattner led the inning off with a walk, Corey Eisenband followed with an infield single, and both runners advanced into scoring position on a passed ball. Chavkin and Theo Rattner each plated a run on a fielder’s choice, giving Harvey a 3-0 lead. Harvey is now 3-2 in the league and 6-4 overall. The Cavaliers host Forman on Wednesday, May 7, in a nonleague game.
