To attract new players to the game, JJYL has expanded its equipment loaner program for boys and girls in grades K-8 and has launched a program to introduce new players to the game, both initiatives aimed at removing the barriers for kids who want to try the sport.

New Player Orientation for Boys in Grades K-5

For the first time ever, JJYL is offering a free, new player orientation and parent information day for boys in grades K-5. This is a free one-day program where kids will learn the fundamentals of lacrosse -- to get boys comfortable with the game ahead of the spring season or to try out the sport with no commitment. Kids will learn the fundamentals of the game – throwing, catching, cradling and ground balls, as well as the rules and key positions.

While the kids are busy, JJYL will host a Q&A session for parents with JJYL board members, coaches and alumni of the program. This event will be held in the John Jay High School gym from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Jan. 21. Loaner equipment will be provided to players if needed. The program is free but registration is required at www.jjyl.org

Expanded Equipment Loaner Program for New Registrants

In 2016, John Jay Youth Lacrosse launched an equipment loaner program for boys and girls in grades K - 4, offering equipment at no charge to new players.

The program is a solution for parents hesitant to sign their boys or girls up because of the high cost of equipment. After a successful introduction in the 2016 season, JJYL is bringing back and expanding this no-risk equipment loaner program in 2017 to include any new to JJYL registrant in grades K-8.

The way the program works is simple, parents/guardians provide a credit card as a deposit for the cost of the equipment (at the JJYL discounted price). At the end of the season, players can keep the equipment and forfeit their deposit, or return the equipment and receive their full deposit back. To qualify for the loaner program players must be a first-time registrant to John Jay Youth Lacrosse. Boys get a helmet, stick, shoulder pads, arm pads, and gloves. Girls, who require less gear, get a stick and eyewear.

Parents who participated in 2016 praised the program.

“We were hesitant to invest in equipment only to have our son lose interest after the first couple of practices, so the loaner program really made the decision easy for us” said Jason Bishop, whose first-grade son Colin had never played the game before. “He got so hooked on the game we bought the gear so he could practice over the summer.”

“The loaner program was great because it provided our son with what he needed to get started in lacrosse. Having never played lacrosse myself, I was unsure about finding the right equipment, with the right fit and features,” said Steve Halsey, whose son Kyle is in first grade. “This program made it easy. I saw it as being no different than renting an instrument for the school orchestra. In the end, we purchased the lacrosse equipment so that he can continue to play into the fall.”
