Laurie White Takes Home Women's Championship at Salem Golf Club

NORTH SALEM, N.Y. -- Laurie White and Carol Strobel don't own the women's championship trophy at the Salem Golf Club in North Salem, but they've won it so often it's practically a member of their families.

When they teed off in the championship on Aug.16, White and Strobel had won the trophy a combined 20 times. After beating Strobel 5 & 4, the Carmel resident is now halfway to the number of championships Strobel has captured.

"It never gets old," said White, who has defeated Strobel six times for the championship. "We always enjoying playing each other. It wasn't her best day and I felt pretty good."

In the match-play format, White jumped out to the early lead and kept the pressure on Strobel.

"I was 3-up after three," she said. "Getting out in front is the key in this type of play. I was playing really well. I was 5-up after nine holes and was pretty confident I was going to win."

White, who has been a member of the Salem Golf Club since 1999, closed out Strobel on the 14th hole, which is the exact number of championships Strobel has won.

"That is truly an amazing accomplishment," White said. "I don't think I've even played in this tournament 14 times. It really shows what a great, great player that she is. To win that many times is incredible." In other play, Jeanine Nadler of Chappaqua won the first-flight championship, while Sharon Taxter of Ridgefield captured the second-flight championship, beating Peg Towers of North Salem 3 & 1. "We were dead even after nine holes and I won it on the 17th hole" said Taxter. "It was the perfect match. Peg and I gave each other the best possible day on the golf course. We only really had one bad hole."
