New York Wrestling Camp Coming to John Jay

John Jay-Cross River High School will once again be the site for the eighth annual New York Wrestling Camps beginning Monday, June 27, and running through Thursday, June 30.

The four-day camp for high school, junior high school and elementary school wrestelrs, features two of New York State’s finest wrestlers, Mahopac graduate Joe Mazzuro and Troy Nickerson, a Chenango Forks alumnus, who will be the guest teachers.

The sessions run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day. There is a Thursday night session, from 6-8 p.m.

Mazzurco was a three-time Section 1 champion as well as a state champion in 1999. He also finished second and third, in 1998 and 2000, respectively.

Mazzurco graduated with a Section 1-standard 191 wins. He went on to Cornell and was a two-time all-America, finishing fifth in the nation his junior and senior year.

Nickerson is the only five-time New York State champion and went on to become a four-time all-American at Cornell.

John Jay-Cross River wrestling coach Bill Swertfager said 22 schools were represented at the camp last year. North Salem's Ryan Osleeb, the 2011 New York State small-school 130-pound champ and four-time sectional titlist, was an annual participant in this camp.

Along with Mazzurco and Nickerson, many former Section 1 champs and place finishers will be assisting. This group includes John Jay graduates/former wrestlers Greg Scott, Billy Watterson, Justin Delamothe, Matt Barbo and Henry Stauber. Horace Greeley alumnus Anthony Tortora and Carmel grad Pat McCabe will also be assisting.

The former Section 1 wrestlers assisting have all wrestled in or are currently wrestling in college. Many of the former John Jay wrestlers attended this camp while in school.
