NORTH SALEM, N.Y. Practically since the day it opened in early spring, North Salems Farmer and the Fish has been packed to overflowing with appreciative locals and curious outliers. Now The New York Times has sent its suburban restaurant critic, M.H. Reed, to give her expert opinion.
The Farmer and the Fish, located in the refurbished Purdy Homestead, was established by North Salems Edward Taylor, in partnership with executive chef Michael Kaphan. Taylor also owns Fish Restaurant in New Yorks Greenwich Village and has had a long career as a purveyor of fresh fish.
Locally, the farmer combines with the fish because Taylor has converted the hill behind the building to a terraced garden, where fresh herbs and vegetables are grown to complement the fresh fish and other items on the menu.
The Farmer and the Fish is located at the intersection of Routes 116 and 22 in Purdys. Prices are moderate, reservations are accepted. Lunch is served Monday through Saturday from noon to 3 p.m., dinner every day beginning at 5:30 p.m. Sunday brunch is served from noon to 3 p.m.
