North Salem Celebrates Earth Day

NORTH SALEM, N.Y. – North Salem will look a little different next week, after dozens, scores, perhaps even hundreds of volunteers each spend a few hours picking up roadside litter.

The North Salem Improvement Society (NSIS) is holding its annual Earth Day Extravaganza on Saturday, and providing volunteers with free bags and gloves, coffee, hot chocolate, doughnuts, juice and a lot of encouragement, in keeping with its motto, “You Can Make a Difference!”

Everyone is invited to stop by the Ruth Keeler Memorial LIbrary any time from 9  to 11 a.m. on Saturday to pick up supplies. Mark the section of road you plan to clean up, enjoy a little refreshment, and head out with family or friends to de-litter the town. There is no need to return the full bag. Simply leave it by the side of the road, to be collected later on by the North Salem Highway Department.

In case you cannot get there on Saturday, bags and gloves will be available all week at the library. Youngsters will be given community service credits for pitching in.

The Improvement Society is also selling T-shirts ($8) and reusable shopping bags and garden aprons ($5) to put you in an ecological mood.

On a similar note, the North Salem Open Land Foundation (NSOLF) is inviting volunteers to pack up their personal lopers, cutters and chainsaws, don their long pants, long sleeves, work boots and gloves, and drop by Baxter Preserve to help clear away the vines that seem intent on taking over. The NSOLF will also be serving refreshments.

What’s more, NSOLF, in association with the North Salem Central School District, is now primed to open the second season of the North Salem Community Garden, located on the grounds of the North Salem Middle/High School. Last year’s garden was a highly popular and productive success. There are still a few raised beds available for this year’s growing season and there is no charge. To reserve a space, call Dr. Bovino at North Salem High School (914) 669-5414, ext. 2026.

Both the NSIS and the NSOLF will cancel Saturday’s events in case of heavy rain. In that case, the events will be moved to Sunday, April 21.
