DUTCHESS COUNTY, N.Y. - You probably won't find Sweet Central Express owner Michael Eugene Fertucci driving his gourmet ice cream truck down your neighborhood street, ringing those familiar bells that had kids of all ages racing for their favorite treat.
But if you do run into the brightly-decorated ice cream truck - at a party, festival, carnival, private or corporate event, you'll be glad you did.
Fertucci, a Culinary Institute graduate and gourmet pastry chef who resides in LaGrange, spent 13 years traveling and working with different chefs and restaurants.
On one of his stops he was the cake decorator at the Plaza in Manhattan, and Fertucci still loves to make specialty cakes - like a trademark Louis Vuitton bag cake - with a price tag in the 900.00 dollar range.
For the last six years, Fertucci has been focused on ice cream - classic, hand-turned, frozen custard, and more recently, shaved italian ices. He churns out in the neighborhood of 13 to 20 tubs per night, at the Crooked Rooster in Poughkeepsie (where it is also available).
Fertucci's truck specializes in his hand made custard, shaved ices, and a variety of cookies so customers can create their own ice cream sandwich.
