Purdys' Friends of Karen Receives New Grant

NORTH SALEM, N.Y. - Friends of Karen, the Purdys-based organization that provides emotional, financial and advocacy support to families of children with life-threatening illnesses, has been granted $75,000 by the Insurance Industry Charitable Foundation to expand its sibling support program.

The sibling program provides emotional support to the sisters and brothers of critically ill children, who often succumb to the household upheaval by demonstrating negative social behavior and poor progress in school.

The grant will enable Friends of Karen to add a full-time sibling support counselor, thereby doubling the number of children who will receive help.

Betsy Myatt, an executive director at the foundation said, “We’ve been impressed and moved by the compassion and support that Friends of Karen provides to so many families and we’re happy that our gift will enable them to extend that support to the sometimes forgotten brothers and sisters.”

Since its inception in 1978, Friends of Karen has helped the families of nearly 12,000 seriously ill children in the New York metropolitan area. For more information, call (914) 617-4040 or go to its website.
